It seems that by default phone twinning doesn't work if the call comes from an external source.

For example of I twin my Snom 720 to my mobile and another extension on the SAIL rings my extension then my mobile rings.  However if my extension is in the ring group for incoming calls, when a call comes in my extension rings but my twinned phone doesnt.

Is there a setting that blocks forwarding from external sources?

Thanks

This is the default behaviour for a ring group.   It will ignore forwards and twinning.  Twinning will only work on a direct dial to the extension.  So, it will work on an internal dial or on a DDI dial which goes direct to the phone.

Is there a way of changing this default behaviour?

Twinning is intended for direct dials to the recipient's extension.

However, if you really want to call a mobile (or any other external number) from a call group you can do it in one of two ways:-

  • You can simply add it into the call group target list.
  • If you have V5 or higher, you can change the dial params associated with the callgroup to allow redirects and set the phone to forward to the number (do this using the phone's onboard forward, not the SARK's *21*)

If you want to use the second option, simply remove the lower case "i" from the dial param list in the edit panel for the call group.

You need to exercise a little caution with either of these options because they may cause unintended problems.  For example, you have a sales call group and you allow the group members to forward their phones out of the group.   Salesman A forwards his phone to his mobile and leaves the office.  Sometime later, the battery fails on his phone or he puts his phone into DND or airplane mode.   Now, every call that comes into the sales call group will likely go straight to Salesman A's voicemail because his phone will be first to answer.  Probably not what we wanted.
